Terrified residents on Glasgow's millionaire row 'woken by Range Rover exploding as homes filled with smoke'

Terrified residents on Glasgow's millionaire's row have told how their properties filled with smoke after a luxury motor was engulfed in flames.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Claremont Terrace, in the Park Circus area of the city, shortly before 2am on Friday.

Residents on the plush street were woken by two loud explosions before their properties filled with smoke.

A black Range Rover parked on the street was engulfed by flames and exploded.

Images show the melted car was completely burnt out, while shattered glass from the driver’s side window was left lying on the road and the headlights of the vehicle were also smashed.

Neighbours told how they were scared as the smoke from the fire filled the street following the loud explosions.

One resident told the Daily Record: “We all woke up at around 1.30am to a massive explosion and I just lay in bed thinking, ‘what was that?’

“We got such a fright. Then about five minutes later there was a smaller explosion and then I could smell smoke.

“That’s what made me really worried because I thought maybe my son had left the cooker on. The smoke was literally flooding into my room.

“When I looked out the window the whole street was covered in smoke. You couldn’t actually see the street.”

Residents said the houses were not evacuated while fire fighters battled the blaze for around two hours.

Another neighbour said: “It’s very odd. A car doesn’t just explode for no reason.

“We woke up to the massive explosion at around 1.30am. There’s always kids in the park so we didn’t really think anything of it.

“Then we saw smoke and went I looked out the window the whole car was ablaze.

“The fire brigade were here for hours, they couldn’t extinguish it. They were dousing water on it then flames would just appear again, they were at it for ages.”

A third said: “This is supposed to be a nice area but this is the second car that has been torched here in the last few months. I live on my own and it’s quite scary all this. You don’t know who is hiding where, or who is watching.”

By lunchtime on Friday the car had been uplifted but the scorch marks and burnt rubble remain across the road and pavement.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call at 01.41am on the 6th of August to Claremont Terrace in Glasgow to reports of a car fire.

“One appliance attended.”

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
