Terrified primary school children told to 'hide under desks' after threats were made

Groups of children were reportedly told to 'hide under their desks' today after 'threats' were made to a south Manchester primary school.

And classes were given new dismissal arrangements following the distressing incident today, December 6.

Parents of youngsters at St Mary's RC Primary School were sent a concerning message this afternoon informing them of different collection arrangements.

The school has said it is now believed it was the victim of a 'hoax call'.

A text sent to parents, which was seen by the Manchester Evening News gave them various dismissal plans for children "due to an ongoing police incident this afternoon."

It went on to then explain that only parents of early years were allowed on site, adding: "all children are safe."

Various year groups had to be collected from different gates around the school site.

Siblings were also dismissed along with their younger siblings, according to the message.

Parents took to a local Facebook group to say they had calls from their children telling them they had to "get under the desks".

Another parent told the M.E.N that her daughter said she had to "sit under her desk for an hour."

Other concerned parents added: "I am on pins waiting for them to get back."

Police confirmed they were called to the school just before 1pm this afternoon.

Officers are currently investigating the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

Mylene Maguire, Executive Headteacher, St Mary's RC Primary School, Levenshulme, said: "Following a number of what we now know to have been hoax calls to the school this afternoon, as a precaution we reverted to the system we had in place earlier in the year that saw pupils escorted to the gates to meet their parents at the end of the day, rather than allowing parents onto school premises.

"The calls were reported immediately to the police who came out to the school and are now investigating."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called just after 12:45 pm on Monday 6 December 2021 to reports a threat had been made towards St Mary's RC Primary School, Clare Road, Levenshulme.

"Officers attended the school and are currently investigating."
