Terrified passenger films flames outside plane window after engine catches fire

Heart-stopping footage shows what appears to be flames outside a plane's cabin window after the engine catches on fire forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.

The Atlas Air flight had taken off from Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Saturday night when the military chartered flight developed a mechanical fault with one engine.

The video was captured by a passenger on the flight as the plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, which is also in Honolulu.

The clip was posted on Twitter and shows a dark cabin before a bright flash of light appears outside the window.

"So our plane almost blew up just now leaving Hawaii," the passenger tweeted, ABC13 reports.

The B767 plane had 212 people on board and was heading for Guam when a muffled explosion can be heard.

A video of the plane was also captured from the ground by Twitter user @itsrichard_e.

He tweeted: "Plane on fire over the Daniel K. Inouye airport in Honolulu. We heard what sounded like an explosion and it started spitting out flames from what looked like the engine."

According to aviation website AvHerald, the plane took off runway 08R.

Once the aircraft had completed its initial climb the crew reporting a right-hand engine failure, due to repeated engine surges/compressor stalls.

The emergency reports said the engine was emitting streaks of flames and bangs so the plane's climb was halted at 2,000 ft and the engine was shut down.

This is undertaken after the crew performed a severe engine damage checklist.

The incident is under investigation and there have been no reported casualties.
