Terrified Glasgow residents watched riot cops storm flats after violent stabbing

Terrified residents in Glasgow have told how they watched on in horror as riot cops stormed a block of flats in response to a violent stabbing this morning.

Locals at the Drygate in the East End of the city say they are too scared to leave their homes after a man was found seriously injured on Collins Street at 7.35am.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene after receiving reports of a disturbance.

On their arrival, they found a man in his 20s with stab wounds.

He was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital ( QUEH ), where he is currently being treated for his injuries.

The area was taped off by police for a short period after.

A local resident described what they saw at the block of flats.

They said: "I was out at around 8am and heard loads of sirens.

“When the police arrived, they all jumped out with riot shields and started running up the stairs.

“Soon after that, police tape was put up at two separate entrances and they’ve been here ever since.”

Another resident added: “It’s very, very scary.

“It makes me too scared to go to the shops because you don’t know who you’re going to run into these days.

“People are coming and going all the time, you don’t know who your neighbours are.

“It makes me weary to even answer my doors because you don’t know who you’ll be facing.”

Another local added: "The violence is worrying, it is a travesty that is never-ending up here.

"This is the Drygate and the police are never away."

Officers remain at the scene where a flat is currently blocked off.

Detectives say that they are following a number of lines of inquiry into the stabbing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At 7.35am on Thursday, April 21, police were called to a report of a disturbance on Collins Street, Glasgow.

"A man in his twenties was found injured and he has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he is being treated for stab wounds.

"Inquiries are ongoing into the serious assault that took place within a block of flats on Drygate.

"Officers are following a number of lines of enquiry in relation to this incident."
