Terrified dogs were found "cowering" in a bush with fur so matted they couldn't see.
Freshfields Animal Rescue, based in Sefton, is now caring for the two dogs which were found in Potters Barn park in Crosby recently, "cowering under a bush". After being found by a member of the public, they were immediately taken to the vet.
But the rescue centre confirmed they were in such a state of neglect they could not see through their matted fur. It is also believed one dog is partially blind as staff say it is "heart-breaking".

A spokesperson said: "We have no idea how these poor dogs came to be in this awful situation, but they are safe, warm and fed now. They were so neglected, and their fur was so matted, that they couldn’t see.
"We’ve named them Ethel and Saffy, and they are both Shi Tzu's. Ethel had to be sedated before we could groom her. She’s had all the mats removed now, and during her sedation the vet noticed that she is in desperate need of a dental, so we will be getting this attended to as soon as possible.
"We believe Ethel is also partially blind, as even with the mats gone, she is still bumping into things. These are lovely girls with sweet natures, and we’ll do everything we can to help them.
"It’s heart-breaking to think what they must have gone through, and despite their neglect, they are friendly and affectionate dogs who just need some TLC. Thanks to our supporters, who have donated money for their vet bills, they are getting everything they need now."
They added: "We think they are older ladies, so there may be underlying health issues. Saffy seems very congested and possibly has a chest infection. They are underweight and we’re trying to build their strength up.
"We would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who has donated towards the care of Saffy and Ethel, it has made such a big difference. We have managed to secure a foster home for them both together, so they'll be settling there soon after a few more days of recovering at home with a member of our kennels staff."
