Terrible Renfrew killing is focus of behind-the-scenes BBC Scotland documentary

The mindless killing of Renfrew man Paul Mathieson is the latest to be featured in an award-winning BBC Scotland documentary series.

Murder Case has unparalleled access to Police Scotland’s Major Investigations Team (MITs) and their pursuit of justice.

Filmed over the course of two years by acclaimed filmmaker Matt Pinder, the programme goes behind the scenes on the complex case, which began when dad-of-one Paul, 37, was battered and left dying on a Renfrew street in 2018.

When Paul later succumbs to his injuries, a murder investigation is launched by the MITs, led by senior investigating officer, DCI Martin Fergus, pictured below.

The episode is called Captured on Camera and, despite the full assault being caught on grainy CCTV, the investigation becomes a complex ‘whodunnit’ inquiry when the perpetrator cannot be identified and disappears from the scene.

Paul’s sister Amanda Digby – an A&E nurse at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow where Paul was taken - made several public appeals, see below,  to urge people to help with the investigation.

For over five months, some of the most skilled detectives in Scotland work tirelessly to try and identify the assailant. But, with a lack of any forensic evidence, vulnerable and unreliable witnesses, the elements conspire against them.

The programme shows how DCI Martin Fergus and his team work tirelessly to get the break they need to provide answers for Paul’s anguished family and give justice to the victim.

Paul's killer Jamie Anderson,36, was jailed for nine years last March.

Anderson followed Paul as he carried a pizza box and pummelled him to the ground and repeatedly kicked him in the throat.

Anderson was finally snared after his distinctive Nike trainers were captured on CCTV.

Made by Firecrest Films, Murder Case gives a unique insight into the work of Police Scotland’s Major Investigations Team as they look to maintain their exceptional track record in solving murders and complex criminal investigations in Scotland.

 Captured on Camera will be broadcast on BBC Scotland on Tuesday, October 6 at 10pm.
