Terrell Owens says he was ‘blowing up’ Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s phone for a WR job in 2021

Pro Football Hall of Fame WR Terrell Owens recently announced his intentions to come out of retirement and join the Fan Controlled Football league for its upcoming season. He also had more to say about his former NFL coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, Andy Reid.

Owens appeared Wednesday on the “Pat MacAfee Show” to talk about his plans to return to football at 48 years old. Owens recalled trying to contact Reid on multiple occasions last year in hopes of fulfilling a role in Kansas City playing wide receiver. He was very opinionated regarding his effectiveness Chiefs’ offense and even took a few shots at WR Josh Gordon, who joined the team in the middle of the 2021 NFL season.

“I talk extensively, you know, with Andy Reid, who coached me when I was in Philly,” said Owens. “I was blowing his phone up throughout the course of the year my dude bring me in me. But again, they brought Josh Gordon in, and he didn’t do anything. And I’m like, I can do what Josh Gordon was doing, which I mean, he didn’t amount to anything, really. And that’s not to say anything bad about him. But I’m just saying just with the reason of why they brought him in; there was no production.”

Gordon had five catches for 32 yards and one touchdown in 12 games with the Chiefs last season. Owens played two seasons with Reid as his head coach in Philadelphia, with the latter year cut short as The team suspended Owens for erratic behavior. He played his last NFL season in 2010 for the Cincinnati Bengals finishing with 72 catches for 983 yards and nine touchdowns.

“There was no production,” Owens said. “And so you look at the last game that they played, I think it was against the Bengals. They’re in overtime, they’re in the red zone. Just as I mentioned, third down, red zone situations, Patrick Mahomes, he couldn’t find anybody. You insert me into that offense. That’s where I just said I would be valuable. You got Tyreek where you had Tyreek Hill there, you got Travis Kelce, and you put me on the other side of that formation. Somebody has to commit to one side or the other because I end the day I’m going to get open. I’m going to be a viable option. Just as Travis Kelce will be at tight end and Tyreek Hill. So those are like I said, it has to be a very unique situation for me and obviously a good opportunity. But again, like I said, I know that I can come in, and I can contribute.”

There are plenty of hot takes flying from one of the greatest wide receivers of his era. We’ll probably never know if Reid actually considered Owens’ advances, but it’s safe to say at 48 years old, his days in the NFL are probably numbered.
