Rich rooms are a tall order come spring and summer. While jewel tones can feel a little too… imposing over 80 degrees, terracotta has been striking a sweet spot. Cocooning even the most sun-loving rooms, it makes a statement without making a statement.
Quite literally translating to ‘baked earth’ in Italian, terracotta is a warm fête of orange, brown, and pinkish red that shifts with the light – brighter by day, deeper and cozier as evening sets in. While it’s emerging as a key color trend for spring/summer 2026 – spanning the retro borders in Emma Chamberlain’s buzzy collaboration with West Elm to the outdoor-ready cushions by Sarah Sherman Samuel – it’s got a familiar feel. So familiar, in fact, you might recall a similar chroma from ancient Roman stone, classic brickwork, or the very soil beneath your feet.
‘Used wisely, this is a wonderful color family to use,’ notes Farrow & Ball, which mixes a reunion of relatives like Porphyry Pink, Fox Red, Loggia, and Red Earth. ‘These are not shrinking violets and need to be considered before taking the leap. A good application is cabinetry, such as kitchens or boot rooms, but they are rather charming for guest bedrooms,’ calling the comparatively non-overwhelming hue (looking at you, oxblood) a ‘rather welcome delight for the occasional overnight.’
