Plans for a new terrace on a bar operating over a now closed music venue have been submitted.
Proposals submitted to Liverpool Council would see Seel Street’s Zanzibar refurbished, with a terrace added to its bar on the upper floor.
The venue closed earlier this year as the pandemic battered live music venues, many of which face many more months of disruption and lost revenue.
In an Instagram post in August, Zanzibar director Scott Burgess said the decision was “heartbreaking” but that, “with a very limited time left on our lease and too many years of wear and tear on our building structure”, it was untenable for the venue to continue to operate.
The current application has been submitted by JSM Company and refers mainly to the upper floor bar in the building, rather than the main venue below.
Documents submitted with the application by Wroot Design say the upper floor a roof terrace will be incorporated into the new design.

The report said: “The creation of the new terrace is in place of the demolished venue roof and new steel columns are to be created to support the newly created load. The new terrace will be covered in a retractable canopy structure.
“A new toilet block will be constructed in the corner of the newly constructed upper storey terrace. Solid walls will be built along the boundary lines to ensure there is no visual link down onto any surrounding buildings.”

The report said that the scale of the refurbished bar will be similar to other buildings in the area and its format, with the bar operating independently of the venue below, will continue.
It said: “The previous use of the building was split between the upper bar and the lower venue which acted independently. The new proposal will see this arrangement continue with the upper storey bar acting independently from the venue below.”
The documents say that significant structural work is needed at the back of the building, with the roof and ceilings suffering from severe dilapidation.
Liverpool Council will decide on the application in the coming months.
