He was humanity's only hope in the fight against the machines.
Much of the Terminator franchise has been built around the prophesised future leader of the human resistance against the machines: John Connor.
The most iconic portrayal of the character was child actor Edward Furlong as a teenage version of the character who was hunted down by the machines in Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
Thankfully, John was protected in that film by a re-programmed T-800 model (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his own battle-ready mother, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton).
But what role does John play in the new Terminator film, Dark Fate, which sees Hamilton return as a battle-hardened Sarah fighting the machines?

Terminator Dark Fate: Is John Connor in the new sequel?
John Connor does appear in a cameo appearance in the opening scenes of Terminator Dark Fate, as a teenager played by Jude Collie as a body double with CGI applying the likeness of Furlong to appear as John in the 1990s (Aaron Kunitz provided his voice).
The scene in question takes place on a beach resort after the events of T2: Judgement Day, with the deadly future that featured Skynet and the 1997 date of Judgement Day having been prevented thanks to the Connors and the destroyed reprogrammed T-800.
However, the tranquil life of the Connors is interrupted when a different T-800 copy appears and - despite a physical struggle with Sarah - guns down John in front of her eyes.
The Terminator departs, leaving Sarah cradling her dead son.
So, essentially, Dark Fate renders the happy ending of T2 rather null and void.
Sarah is then revealed to have spent the rest of her life devoted to hunting and killing Terminators in John's name.
Dark Fate, indeed.
