Terminally ill young mum gets dream wedding thanks to 'overwhelming' public support

A terminally ill young mum will have the wedding she has always dreamed of thanks to kindhearted members of the public and local businesses.

Gemma Mcgowan, from Paisley, will tie the knot in style with sweetheart Steven Murie at the Dalmeny Park Hotel in Barrhead next month after they were inundated with messages of support and offers to help secure everything they needed for it to go ahead.

Renfrew-based Wedding Wish Makers threw their weight behind a campaign to make the couple’s day special after Gemma's heartbreaking story emerged - and were left 'overwhelmed' at the response and kindness shown by those who contacted them.

29-year-old Gemma, mum to baby Arran, has a very rare cancer of the nasal cavity and was given just months to live after being diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma in May last year, the Paisley Daily Express reports.

And despite months of treatments, including radiotherapy, immunotherapy and life-changing surgery in which surgeons had to remove her eye - Gemma and her heartbroken partner were told nothing more could be done.

Due to Gemma's condition, the wedding was brought forward from next year, with Wedding Wish Makers calling on the trade to provide the full range of services, from wedding cars to outfits for the bridesmaids.

Thanks to the public's help, Gemma and fiancee Steven have managed to secure a three tier cake, piper and humanist celebrant, and a total of nearly £3,800 has also been made in donations to pay for the venue and other fees.

Suzanne Stevenson of Wedding Wish Makers told the paper: "We now have everything arranged for Gemma and Steven’s wedding apart from a videographer.

"We have had so many messages of support via email, private mail and comments. The volume has been overwhelming and we cannot thank everyone who offered their services enough.

"It is an impossible task for us to reply to everyone, however, please know how much we appreciate your kindness. Thank you to all the suppliers who are supporting the couple on their big day. What a beautiful day it is going to be.”
