Tokyo Electric Power Holdings Inc. on Tuesday filed for approval of its plan to release treated radioactive water from its Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant with the Nuclear Regulatory Authority.
The plan is to release the water, which has been stored in tanks on the premises, into the sea through a newly built undersea tunnel.
The company aims to start releasing the water in spring of 2023.
The company has purified contaminated water that has been created at the plant and has removed almost all radioactive substances, except for radioactive tritium.
The government decided in April this year to release the water into the ocean.
