Tensions rise among This Morning's guests as Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary look on

The topic of vaccine passports led to a heated debate on ITV's This Morning today.

TV presenter Beverley Turner expressed concerns that requiring a vaccine passport on mobile phones would lead to a microchip in people's hands for access in and out of pubs.

The 47-year-old suggested that herd immunity for those at lower risks would have been the more advisable move.

Matthew Wright fired back as the two delved into a heated debate as Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary looked on.

Matthew said: "With vaccine passports we can potentially get rid of all the social distancing, all of the stuff we've had in the past.

"That's the way forward. That would benefit the hospitality industry far more than just opening the doors, introducing all of the restrictions we've had in the past."

Beverley hit back and said: "We can do that anyway, Matthew. We can do that anyway if we have vaccinated the most vulnerable.

"We're talking about this wave in Europe that's going to come over here, this mutation.

"The wave in Europe is the Kent virus. We gave it to them.

"So we don't have to worry about that coming back here to reinfect us."

Matthew interrupted, and said: "Other mutations might follow, including from India."

Beverley added: "We should've allowed all of the young people, last summer, to develop a herd immunity."

Matthew said: "Herd immunity without vaccination is the strongest survive. You are literally saying let weak people die."

Twitter users were quick to have their say

@darkagenda said: "Matthew Wright reckons "herd immunity" is only possible with mass vaccination, and Bev Turner is spouting "paranoid, conspiracy nonsense."

@saima_samad_ said: "@Matthew_Wright I’m with you mate. I can’t trust anything that comes out of anyone that says “we’ll be tracked”."

@Mister_XP said: "Everyone is entitled to their opinion but, this Bev Turner on @thismorning made me so angry. Living with someone whom is in their mid 40s with Asthma who hasn't had the vaccine and no sign of it yet."
