Tennis star Osaka buys into U.S. women's soccer team

Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka has become a part owner of the North Carolina Courage of the National Women's Soccer League, the two-time defending champion club announced Thursday.

"My investment in the North Carolina Courage is far beyond just being a team owner, it's an investment in amazing women who are role models and leaders in their fields and inspirations to all young female athletes," Osaka said in a statement released by the club.

The Courage won the U.S. pro league's title in 2018 and 2019.

Chairman Steve Malik welcomed Osaka as an investor in the team. "Naomi embodies the values we have been striving to cultivate at our club, and she brings an invaluable viewpoint on topics beyond sports."

The 23-year-old Osaka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, is currently in Australia preparing for the opening Grand Slam tournament of the season. She has also gained attention for her off-the-court activism.
