Liverpool fan Caroline Wozniacki admits she had “everything crossed” when a suspension in fixtures last season threatened her beloved Reds chances of securing the Premier League title but the retired tennis ace has backed Jurgen Klopp’s side for glory again in the coming campaign.
Despite hailing from Odense in Denmark and now dividing her time between her home city, Monte Carlo, New York and Florida, former world number one Wozniacki, describes herself as a lifelong Liverpool fan and has been to Anfield to watch them play in the flesh.
The 30-year-old who now suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, hung up her racket back in January but admits she feared that 2020 might not be the Reds year of destiny after all when the prospect of their first League Championship since 1990, what had previously looked like a formality, was potentially derailed by the global coronavirus pandemic.
Wozniacki told Sky Sports : "I was so thrilled when they won the title.
“We've been waiting a long time for this and I think all us Liverpool supporters during the year were keeping everything crossed that this was going to be the year and we all at one point had to shake our heads when the pandemic put a stop to the whole world.
“I felt like the timing of that with Liverpool could only happen to us but at the same time, I'm so glad that they finished the season.
“They were the best team last year, they won the Champions League the year before, and I'm so happy and proud of the guys.”
With the Reds defence of their Premier League crown beginning at home to newly-promoted Leeds United on Saturday, Wozniacki, who now has more time to watch their matches, is looking forward to another season of success.
She added: “I definitely think they have a team to win it again this year.
“I have all my gear, I have everything, so I'll be watching every game.”
