Tennis star Kyrgios' pet bird rescued from a tree in Watson

Buddy, the pet Macaw of Canberra tennis star Nick Kyrgios has survived an ordeal involving a very tall tree in Watson and a flock of aggressive wild birds.

ACT Fire and Rescue crews leapt to the assistance of Buddy - and owner Nick, who posted about the incident on Instagram this weekend.

The territory's Emergency Services Agency said the crews responded to an animal rescue incident involving a nearby resident's pet bird on Phillip Avenue, Watson on Saturday afternoon, and calling the rescue an "Im-peck-able" job from the team.

"After escaping from its cage, the Macaw became struck in a tree which was approximately 10 metres high and was being attacked by a flock of wild birds," a spokesperson said.

"ACT Fire and Rescue crews were able to safely rescue and reunite the Macaw with its owner with the help of their Bronto aerial firefighting appliance.

"The Bronto features a 44-metre telescopic ladder platform which can perform rescues at varying heights."

The animal rescue comes after recent human rescues for the Fire and Rescue crews, including a mountain biker who had to be carried down 800 metres of steep terrain over a four-hour period after he crashed at Mount Majura last weekend.

Kyrgios moved back into the family home in Watson during the pandemic lockdown. The family's other pets, dogs King and Quincy, are less likely to find themselves stuck in a tree, but Kyrgios' mother Nill joked Buddy will outlive them all.

"The macaw lives to 100 you know so we have to write him in our will," she told The Canberra Times earlier this year.
