Tennis courts in Renfrewshire in line for revamp if council served up ace in funding bid

Tennis courts in Paisley and Renfrew could be in line for a cash injection – if Renfrewshire Council is successful with a funding bid.

The local authority is looking for financial support from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) as it tries to bring facilities at Brodie and Robertson parks up to standard.

An update will be provided at Wednesday’s leadership board, at which elected members will be asked to allow the director of environment, housing and infrastructure to progress some of the finer details of a formal application.

Councillor Bruce MacFarlane, SNP rep for Paisley Southeast, said the progress on the bid for financial support from the LTA to upgrade the courts was “extremely welcome”.

He added: “These courts are well used but they definitely need investment.

“Although we are not quite over the line yet, this is another step in the right direction to ensure the necessary funding is in place for top quality tennis facilities at Brodie Park.

“A condition of the funding from the LTA is that a booking system is put in place which would result in a change to the current set-up where people can walk on.

“Any implementation of a booking system must be accessible and affordable to everyone to ensure that this community asset continues to be enjoyed by everyone.”

Councillor Lisa-Marie Hughes, an SNP rep for Renfrew North and Braehead, said: “After some months of working with officers, I’m pleased to see an update in next week’s leadership board papers on the application to LTA to refurbish Robertson Park courts.

“We’ve moved on a step in the application process and the paper is asking that councillors give officers the power to accept a grant if it is offered (we aren’t quite at that point) and complete the process.

“It’s cross our fingers very hard time Renfrew.”

While the courts at Brodie and Robertson parks are being prioritised for initial funding, the facilities at Park Road, Johnstone, will be added if money becomes available.
