The Tennessee Titans should absolutely be prioritizing the backup quarterback position this offseason, as the departure of Marcus Mariota leaves Logan Woodside as the only other signal-caller outside of Ryan Tannehill on the roster.
It’s possible the Titans will address the need in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft, and former WSU quarterback Anthony Gordon is on the team’s radar.
According to a source with Caric Sports on Sunday, the quarterback met with Titans quarterbacks coach Pat O’Hara at this year’s NFL Combine.
Gordon, arguably one of the most underrated prospects in this year’s draft, served as Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew’s backup during part of his time at Wazzu.
According to his former coach, Mike Leach, the battle between the two was closely contested.
“I think the edge that Gardner had was that he’d actually played in a game, so he had a little more experience,” Leach told me last month. “I thought that each of the three did things that were better than the other. Gardner, for not having been exactly in the offense, really gained a lot of ground quickly, and in the end I found that to be quite impressive, and then statistically you could argue that Anthony at various points was ahead for sure.”
Based on that, Gordon is very much on par with Minshew and could have the same level of success or more in the NFL.
Gordon brings solid arm strength, good pocket presence, field vision and perhaps the quickest release of any quarterback in the class to whichever team picks him up.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Titans ultimately make the move later this week, but there’s no question Gordon is going to be a huge steal for whatever team lands him late in the draft.
