Tennessee Titans met with Mississippi State QB Tommy Stevens

The Tennessee Titans have a need at backup quarterback heading into the 2020 NFL Draft, with just Logan Woodside on the roster behind Ryan Tannehill.

It’s hard to see the Titans addressing this early on, and it’s far more likely they’ll take a guy in the later rounds or sign an undrafted free agent.

That player could be former Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens, who told me on Monday afternoon that he met with the Titans at the East-West Shrine Bowl.

He’s also had virtual meetings with the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, the New Orleans Saints, and phone calls with roughly 15 teams.

Stevens, though different in some ways from former Bulldogs quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, has drawn the same types of comparisons to Taysom Hill that his predecessor did.

Stevens transferred from Penn State after functioning as the team’s “Lion” on certain packages to join the Bulldogs as a fifth-year senior ahead of last season.

It wasn’t a quick or easy decision for him, after persevering through an injury-ridden 2018 that limited his ability to compete in the spring after having to wait three years behind Trace McSorley.

Stevens will bring grit and a strong work ethic to whichever team he lands with, along with the versatility he’s developed such a reputation for.

Stevens’ last appearance on a college football field was in the Music City Bowl, when he ended the season on a personal high note. He completed 17-of-26 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 17 times for 71 yards and a touchdown in the 38-28 loss.
