The Tennessee Titans bolstered their offensive line in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, taking a step toward filling the void of Jack Conklin by selecting former Georgia offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson at No. 29 overall.
The first-round pick recently fielded a question on how he landed his No. 79, to which he gave a pretty interesting response — and it has to do with his massive size.
“Coming out of high school, I was wearing 74,” Wilson said Tuesday on the Official Titans Podcast. “When I got to college another player had 74. My coach said I’m going to give you the biggest number that you can legally wear. So, it kind of stuck. Because I can’t wear 80, but I can wear 79.”
Replacing Conklin, who was on the upswing before he departed to the Cleveland Browns, will be no easy task. But Wilson has the potential and experience playing at right tackle, starting 24 games at the position over the past two seasons at Georgia.
However, standing in his way for the starting job is Dennis Kelly, who he’ll have to compete with during training camp in order to be able to start on the right side during his rookie season in 2020.
