If you ask Tennessee Titans first-round pick Isaiah Wilson what he likes the most about football, his answer goes right to the physicality of the sport.
According to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online, Wilson enjoys “beating people up” on the football field and likes to “essentially break another man’s will”, as he stated on a conference call on Thurday night after being drafted by the Titans.
“I think the best part of my game is I am physical, and I enjoy beating people up,” Wilson said. “I enjoy running the ball, I enjoy trying to essentially break another man’s will. I would say that is my strong suit. … I just want to beat people up (on the football field) and I am looking forward to it. I am ready to work to be the best Titan I can be.”
Well, you can’t go wrong with that mindset, especially when playing for a team like the Titans that revolves its offense around a physical ground attack featuring Derrick Henry.
At 6-foot-6 and 350 pounds, Wilson certainly has the frame to be an asset in that regard and can continuing beating people up at the next level. He’s also an athletic freak, as he lined up as a wildcat quarterback in high school
The Georgia product went on to praise the culture that the Titans have built and is a big fan of head coach Mike Vrabel, who is no doubt a player’s coach.
“I know it’s a team with a great culture,” Wilson said. “They want to win, they do win. They like to run the ball and pound people, and they throw the ball as well. I am just happy to be a part of the (Titans) family. I love the culture there, and I want to be a part of it. And I’m ready to do whatever the team needs to succeed and win. I am ready to work for Tennessee.”
If Wilson can impose his will on opposing defenders and prove to be an upgrade over Dennis Kelly, he’ll might end up winning over skeptics who believe that the Titans should have gone in a different direction.
But even then, that might not be enough, as the Titans passed on some players with great potential at cornerback in order to take a player at a position that wasn’t the team’s biggest need at the moment.
