One of the Tennessee Titans’ biggest needs coming into the offseason was adding a cornerback who could play in the slot with Logan Ryan hitting free agency and unlikely to return in 2020.
So, when the Titans had a pre-draft meeting with LSU cornerback Kristian Fulton, who turned out to be the team’s second-round pick, one of the first things they asked him was if he could play slot corner.
Clearly the Titans are at least considering putting him there for the upcoming season, and it’s a spot Fulton knows well and has the ability to play, as he pointed out.
Not only did Fulton play there as a freshman, but he also has the physical tools to do so. On top of great size, toughness and coverage skills, Fulton’s 4.46 40-yard dash speed makes him in ideal fit for the position.
Head coach Mike Vrabel explained that Fulton’s speed makes him a good match for what the Titans need.
There’s more to Fulton than just being a slot corner, though.
The LSU product has the potential to be a lockdown corner in the NFL and could transition to the outside in 2021. This would allow the Titans to part ways with Malcolm Butler and his enormous contract next year.
The Titans were truly lucky Fulton fell as far as he did, with so many experts projecting him as a first-round pick. Fulton could turn out to be an immediate impact player no matter where the Titans deploy him and he may end up being one of the biggest steals of the draft.
