Tennessee offense overwhelms Missouri in 63-37 victory

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. _ Powered by freshman running back Damarea Crockett, Missouri's run game was unstoppable Saturday.

Unfortunately, the same was true for Tennessee senior quarterback Josh Dobbs, who celebrated senior day at Neyland Stadium with a 63-37 victory.

Dobbs, who left to a rousing ovation with 2:24 remaining, was responsible for 413 yards and five touchdowns, including the longest run of his career _ a 70-yard touchdown _ early in the fourth quarter as the Volunteers pulled away for an epic beating.

Tennessee's 63 points are the most Mizzou has allowed since a 66-0 loss at then-No. 9 Kansas State on Nov. 20, 1999.

It also spoiled a record-setting day for Crockett, who finished with 24 carries for 225 yards.

Crockett, who already owned the Tigers' true-freshman rushing record, blew past Brad Smith's single-season and single-game freshman rushing records.

Smith, a former Mizzou star quarterback, rushed for 1,029 yards as a redshirt freshman in 2002, including 213 yards Oct. 5, 2002, versus Oklahoma.

Crockett, who has 1,062 yards in 153 carries this season, obliterated both records. He also owns the freshman record for touchdowns with 10, but his heroics Saturday were not nearly enough.

MU sophomore quarterback Drew Lock threw two critical interceptions.

The first one, which came on the opening play of the second half, gifted Tennessee with a crucial touchdown, and the second was returned 59 yards by sophomore defensive end Jonathan Kongbo for the game's final score.

Lock, who finished 21-of-43 for 320 yards with a 50-yard TD to freshman Dimetrious Mason in the fourth quarter, never saw sophomore Vols free safety Micah Abernathy on the first pick.

Three plays later, Dobbs _ who had 10 carries for 190 yards and two scores rushing and was 15-of-22 for 223 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions passing _ drilled a 5-yard touchdown strike to sophomore wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who finished with four catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns, for a 28-20 lead.

The Tigers returned to the ground the next series for a 14-play touchdown drive, which is the longest by plays this season. Crockett had four carries for 44 yards, and junior Ish Witter added eight for 26 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown to cap the drive.

Witter finished with 31 carries for 163 yards with two touchdowns for Mizzou, which outgained Tennessee 740-609 but was outscored 28-10 in the fourth quarter.

Down 28-27, Mizzou got the ball back with a chance to take the lead, but lost 2 yards on a fourth-down speed option with Lock and sophomore running back Nate Strong inside Tennessee territory.

The Vols faced fourth-and-4 on their next drive but were given a first down on an illegal substitution penalty for MU having 12 men on the field. Two plays later, Dobbs scored on a 30-yard touchdown run.

Things started well for the Tigers.

After a quick Tennessee punt, Missouri marched 88 yards in a 12-play opening drive before Crockett scooted free on an off-tackle run to the right and burst upfield for a 22-yard touchdown.

The lead remained 6-0 when junior walk-on Ben Tesson, a transfer from Drake, pulled the extra point wide left to the delight of 101,012 at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee's Marquill Osborne slipped on the ensuing kickoff, inadvertently downing the ball at the 2-yard line, but it didn't matter.

The Volunteers went 98 yards in seven plays before Tigers senior cornerback Aarion Penton turned around on a deep throw along the home sideline. Jennings' 49-yard touchdown catch-and-run put Tennessee in front after junior Aaron Medley's extra point.

Dobbs doubled down early in the second quarter with a 57-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Josh Malone. Dobbs sidestepped the rush by freshman linebacker Cale Garrett as Malone blazed past Mizzou junior safety Anthony Sherrils.

Tigers senior defensive tackle Josh Augusta fumbled inside the Volunteers' 30-yard line on the ensuing drive, but it didn't prove punitive when Medley missed a 47-yard field-goal try.

The next drive belonged to Crockett, who carried six straight times for 69 yards before exiting because of a sore ankle.

Lock did the honors with a 2-yard scoring run off a fake to Witter.

Freshman Tucker McCann replaced Tesson and delivered the extra point, but Tennessee answered right back with junior Alvin Kamara's 4-yard touchdown.

The Tigers counterpunched again, pulling within 21-20 at halftime on a 2-yard run by Witter and McCann's extra point.
