Tennent Street police team find drug needles scattered around car park

Police North Belfast's Tennent Street Neighbourhood Officers on routine overnight patrols say they came across some drug paraphernalia, including needles, in North Street car park on Saturday night. Officers at the scene said that all needles were disposed off appropriately and other items have been removed from the area.

It followed similar finds in March, when officers on foot patrol found drugs paraphernalia less than half a mile away near Regent Street. Publicity resulting from that incident spurred residents to call for "safe injecting rooms". One observer wrote on social media: "I work with the homeless and addicts every week.... No one wakes up one morning and decides they are going to become a heroin addict. They are someone's son, daughter, mother, father . . .

"We need safe injecting rooms here in Belfast for these guys and girls until they ask help . . . No one knows anyone's circumstances or why they turn to this dirty drug."

Officers say they will continue to patrol the area, but ask that if anyone sees anything suspicious, not to lift any discarded equipment, but to call them on 101.

Police had to carefully dispose of abandoned equipment, including needles (Police North Belfast)
