Tennent's – Fans launch petition for drinks firm to ditch single-use plastic

An online campaign has been launched calling upon Tennent's to ditch plastic packaging.

Fans of the 'Juicy T' – the best-selling lager in Scotland – are urging the drinks giant to make its products more environmentally friendly.

The petition, launched by GreenChanges, has attracted 386 of 500 signatures since Sunday.

The statement reads: "We live in an age where we must make more effort to cut down on plastic waste and use biodegradable alternatives to improve the environment.

"Each year we move closer towards a more sustainable environment on earth by using wind and solar energy, by driving electric cars to reduce CO2 emissions, by reducing our food wastage and recycling used products to prevent unnecessary manufacturing."

It urges Tennent's to use recyclable cardboard containers, such as those used by Fosters.

It added: "I simply want the brand to recognise the issue and take the initiative that we should be taking, and take the time required to make these changes.

"Lets make Scotland as green as can be."

Tennent's confirmed efforts are already underway to phase out all plastic packaging by 2021.

Kenny Gray, Commercial Managing Director, Scotland said: “At Tennent’s, it’s important to us to operate as efficiently and sustainably as possible, and we know it’s important to our drinkers too.

"A large proportion of our products already come in non-plastic packing, while a small number of our Tennent’s canned packs use hi-cone plastic rings. We’re investing now to move to alternative packaging materials for those packs, with the target of being out of plastic, including plastic rings, by 2021.”
