A hotel in a Tenerife tourist hotspot has been put on lockdown after a holidaymaker reportedly tested positive for coronavirus.

Local media reports that a man, understood to be an Italian doctor, had travelled to the Spanish island from the Lombardy region.

He tested positive for coronavirus after falling ill.

The hotel is believed to be i n quarantine as a precautionary measure as 1000 guests remain on the premises.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo has named the hotel as the H10 Costa Adeje Palace in the south of the island.

Canary Islands president Angel Victor Torres tweeted: "This afternoon the coronavirus protocol has been activated for an Italian tourist in the south of Tenerife.

“The result from the first test carried out in the Canaries is positive.

“Tomorrow new tests will take place in Madrid. The patient has been quarantined.”

It is believed the Italian doctor chose to go to a health centre on the island and asked to have the tests done after suspecting he was infected.
