Tenant given hefty fine after loud music and noise complaints

A Bristol tenant was given a hefty fine after loud music, banging and shouting was heard coming from their flat.

The tenant, who lived in a council flat in Lawrence Weston, was warned repeatedly by Bristol City Council about the disruption they caused to their neighbours.

They were sent warning letters in February and March 2021, but refused to enter into any mediation, and they were eventually given an abatement notice by the local authority in March.

However, officers found that they were breaching the abatement notice when they attended a nearby property and through The Noise App, which allows people to record noise nuisance.

And on January 24, they were prosecuted for breaching the notice and ordered to pay large sums of money at Bristol Magistrates Court.

They were fined £660 and ordered to pay costs of £770.03, on top of a victim surcharge of £66.

A Facebook post from the council's Bristol Neighbourhood Enforcement Team said: "Last week the previous tenant of a council flat in Lawrence Weston (BS11) was prosecuted for breach of a noise Abatement Notice," which followed "complaints of loud music, banging and shouting".

It added: "You can find out more information about noise complaints here: https://www.bristol.gov.uk/pests-pollution-noise-food/noise

"If you are a council tenant affected by noisy neighbours please call 01179222200."
