Ten-year-old pulled from the water at popular beach

A father and his 10-year-old son were pulled to safety by a surfer last night after getting into difficulty at Ogmore-By-Sea.

The boy and his dad had been assisted from the water by the surfer during strong surf conditions.

South Wales Police are appealing for the "man in a black wetsuit" that helped the child and his father to come forward.

Both father and son have been confirmed safe and well.

Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat said they launched two lifeboats at 8.43pm following reports of two people in difficulty at sea.

They said: "The crew arrived on scene to find a father and 10-year-old son had been assisted from the water by a surfer in fairly large surf conditions.

"Both casualties were found to be suffering the effects of having been in difficulty in the water and near drowning and were given casualty care by our crew."

Gareth Davey, from Bridgend, was in the area at the time.

"I got to the beach at about 8.20pm and by 9pm there were emergency services everywhere.

"There was about four or five big police vans, lots of coast guards, a massive helicopter circling the area and there was a boat in the water as well. It was a bit mad, it all seemed to come out of nowhere."

Welsh Ambulance, South Wales Police and Llantwit Major Coastguard were also in attendance.

Survival guide: cold water shock

Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat have also warned people to take extra care if they are in the water as temperatures are expected to reach 38 C this week.

They advised: "If you get into trouble, stay calm and #FloatToLive on your back until you can control your breathing."
