Ten things you'll have been through growing up on the Wirral

Growing up on the Wirral brings with it some particular experiences, rites of passage that many Wirralians know only too well.

From that first trip over to Liverpool on the train with friends to the often confused look on people's faces when you try to explain where you're actually from on holiday, there are some things about growing up on the Wirral that many of us share.

We take a look at some of the rites of passage you'll probably know if you grew up in the 'paradise pensinsula'.

1. When someone is introduced as being from Liverpool on TV and you can tell instantly that's not true

While Wirral and Liverpool are close neighbours, there is a distinct difference in the accent between the two areas, something a Wirralian can spot instantly.

2. The first time your mum let you go to Liverpool with your friends

The first trip to Liverpool with friends is a rite of passage for many growing up on the Wirral (Liverpool Echo)

The river acts as a natural divide between Wirral and Liverpool and while both sides of the Mersey have strong connections, for people growing up in the relative quiet of the Wirral the bustle of the city can seem like another world, although is is a mere ferry, train or bus journey away.

That first trip with friends across the water is a rites of passage that many don't forget.

3. Being called a plastic Scouser

For some it is just banter, for others a needless division between two areas intimately connected, but if you're from the Wirral, it's very likely to be a phrase you've heard more than once or twice.

4. The first time you try to explain to someone you meet on holiday where Wirral is.

"So you're from Liverpool then?"

No, not quite, we're in the pretty big peninsula just next to it, looks a bit like a sausage. No?

5. The first time you can’t be bothered explaining and just say you’re from Liverpool

And there comes a time when you give up and just go with it.

You'll recognise that accent anywhere, we must be Scousers? Why not? It's close enough.

6. ...and when you’re out of the country and meet someone who knows where Wirral is.

Soulmates.

We're on an actual map. It can't be that hard can it?

7. Having an unexpectedly intense “Wirral or The Wirral” debate

Perhaps you didn't realise you had an opinion on it.

But obviously it's The Wirral, because it's the Wirral peninsula, right?

8. Feeling deeply the loss of New Brighton baths every summer when the weather gets warm.

The demise of New Brighton baths has been the subject of much annoyance over the years, and there have been numerous, sop far unsuccessful attempts to bring them back.

9. Trying to Google something in New Brighton. Finding answers for Brighton. Starting Google search again

Yes it might have been there first, but there's lots going on in New Brighton these days.

10. The first time you were allowed to go to the Wirral Show and the relief on your mum’s face when you came home in one piece

That weekend when New Brighton would spring to life with what seemed like millions of people converging on the seaside town.

Another Wirral rites of passage that many would love bringing back.
