Ten people rushed to hospital after ammonia leak at British food factory

Ten people have been rushed to hospital after deadly ammonia was leaked at a food factory on Thursday.

Cranswick Country Foods plant in Preston, East Yorkshire, confirmed the leak which saw its site evacuated and temporarily shut down for safety checks.

The corrosive substance can cause immediate burning of the eyes, nose, throat and respiratory tract if high levels are released into the air and can cause blindness, lung damage and death.

Exposure to the highly toxic element can cause irreversible harm and can prove fatal.

Emergency services were called to the site on Thursday evening when all ten employees at the factory were taken to hospital after the small leak was detected, reports Hull Live.

Cranswick said this was a precautionary measure and all workers have now been discharged.

Ten people were rushed to hospital following an ammonia leak at an East Yorkshire food factory last night.

A spokesperson from Cranswick said: "We can confirm there was an ammonia leak at our site in Preston, Hull overnight. Whilst it was a small incident, we evacuated the site as soon as we were aware of the situation.

"The emergency services attended the site. A small number of colleagues were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and they have now all been discharged.

"We are keeping all of our suppliers and customers up to date with the situation.
