Ten of the most highly-rated Swansea restaurants on Tripadvisor which no longer exist

TripAdvisor has been the go to for consumers and restaurants alike to compare and review just about anything.

In recent years however, it has been affected by fake reviews, with the latest TripAdvisor transparency report published this week finding that nearly one million reviews submitted to the website in 2020 were actually fake.

However, this isn't the only issue.

It still contains the ratings and reviews of restaurants and eateries which have permanently closed, with some having shut years ago.

Here are 10 of the most highly-ranked places to eat in Swansea which no longer exist. Whilst some closed way before 2020, and one even shut in 2017, sadly some appear to have disappeared during the pandemic.

1. Jamaican Jill's - TripAdvisor Rank: 35

Jamaican Jill's once had restaurants in both Wind Street and Uplands.

It combined Caribbean food with more traditional Welsh and British dishes, like full breakfasts and jacket potatoes.

But it closed its doors in Walter Road in 2020.

2. Tapestri - TripAdvisor Rank: 51

Tapestri was hidden just off the beaten track. (Google Maps)

Tapestri, in Orchard Street, was known as a great coffee shop/bistro for years, famed particularly for its coffee and vast portions.

It was popular with locals and students alike with many choosing to meet here.

The restaurant underwent an expensive refurbishment, and then closed in 2019.

3. Tino's - TripAdvisor rank: 88

Tino's was a cafe with a difference ion Wind Street.

Retro games were made available for customers to play in a bid to encourage people to ditch their laptops and smart phones and reconnect with one another.

The café served traditional English cuisine and closed in 2018.

4. John's Rice and Peas- TripAdvisor Rank: 113

Salubrious Place, Swansea, is where John's Rice and Peas was based (Google Maps)

Hidden away in one of Swansea's side streets, in Salubrious Place off Wind Street, it would be easy to miss this place if you weren't looking for it.

Serving home-cooked, Caribbean dishes as well as a wide selection of drinks, I didn't read a single negative comment about this place.

A real asset lost from Swansea's food scene.

5. The BBQ Restaurant- TripAdvisor Rank: 139

Greek Acropolis Swansea now stands where The BBQ Restaurant once was. (Google Maps)

With a 5/5 rating on TripAdvisor, it's clear to see that the BBQ Restaurant in The Kingsway was popular.

Whilst it was only open for a short amount of time, its BBQ inspired menu was a hit with the people of Swansea

Since it closed, the Greek Acropolis has taken its place.

6. Coast Italia - TripAdvisor Rank: 140

Situated in High Street, this venue was known for its excellent food as well as its live performances.

This restaurant served a range of dishes and became a firm favourite with large parties.

Whilst Coast Italia closed in 2017, it was swiftly replaced by The Hyst.

7. The Hyst - Tripavisor rank, 146

The Hyst closed its doors in 2020. (South Wales Evening Post)

The Hyst accommodated music, art and content lovers.

The food menus covered Greek food and "Melbourne style Coffee" plus a variety of sandwiches, salads, jacket potatoes through to larger meals.

Replacing Coast Italia, it ran for three years in High Street before closing in 2020. The venue is now home to new bar the Jam Jar.

8. The Grynd, Tripadvisor rating, 166

The Grynd was one of the many hospitality venues that did not re-open after lockdown. (Google Maps)

This traditional café served the best breakfasts in Swansea according to one TripAdvisor review.

It made the decision to close during the pandemic and did not re-open at its Mansel Street location.

9. West Pier Deli - TripAdvisor Rank: 169

Fresh home made sandwiches would be on offer (Google Maps)

This family-run deli provided homemade sandwiches and finely roasted coffee.

Based at Swansea marina, it would host coffee mornings and other fundraising events for the whole community to attend.

10. Walkabout- Tripadvisor Rank: 207

(Jonathan Myers)

Walkabout in Wind Street sadly closed after two decades in January.

Over the years the Australian bar had been a place where people would go for live sport including Grand Slams and Swans victory celebrations.

The bar used to serve wings, burgers and a variety of 'pub grub' but sadly closed in 2020. It's now being transformed into a new venue, including a hotel.
