Ten newborn babies 'catch coronavirus from infected staff' at maternity unit

At least 10 newborn babies have been infected with coronavirus at a hospital's maternity unit in Romania.

It is reported the babies caught the deadly virus from staff at the hospital in Timisoara.

An investigation has been launched by authorities, concerned it was staff infecting patients and not the other way round.

"The mothers tested negative, but the babies tested positive so we have to consider their contacts with medical staff," Health Minister Nelu Tataru said in an interview with the Antena 3 TV station on Monday.

The babies have no symptoms and all but one of them, together with their mothers, have gone into self-isolation at home

One scared mother told a Romanian news website: "For the past two days I have felt like I am living in a horror film.

"The staff were not wearing masks."

Medical staff in the European country have spoken out in recent weeks over insufficient equipment for those on the frontline.

There are more than 4,400 confirmed cases in Romania, of which 700 are infected healthcare workers.

So far 180 people have died.
