Ten ‘filthy and emaciated’ dogs found dumped at side of road in Scottish Borders

Ten 'filthy and emaciated' dogs were found on a roadside in the Scottish Borders sparking a major SSPCA appeal.

The pooches were discovered 'in an appalling condition' on the A68 near Jedburgh on August 22.

Rescue centre staff say the dogs' hair is so matted that they are unable to decipher which breed they actually are, although it's believed they are 'some sort of poodle cross'.

Some of the animals were found running loose, while others had been shut in a derelict building.

Staff at the Arthurshiel Rescue Centre in Melrose managed to contain the abused dogs, who are 'nervous around humans' and 'don't know how to walk on leads'.

They alerted the Scottish SPCA (SSPCA) who are now appealing for information.

SSPCA inspector Jenny Scott said “The dogs were found in an appalling condition.

“They are so matted that at present it’s difficult to tell exactly what breed they are but we think they are some sort of poodle cross.

“The dogs were also filthy and emaciated.

“They are nervous around humans and don’t know how to walk on leads.

“We’d like to find out who these animals belong to and how they came to be in the area.

"If anyone recognises them, please contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
