Ten arrested as police bust sex racket in Assam's Nagaon district

GUWAHATI: Police in central Assam's Nagaon district, acting on specific information, busted a prostitution racket on Friday and detained 10 people in connection with the case.

Of the 10 people, 6 were women and the men included the house owner Mridu Pawan Saikia. Saikia is a resident of Lakhinagar Chariali.

"We have information that a prostitute racket was being run here. We have conducted a raid here today and arrested 10 people in connection with the case. Of the 10, we have caught two women red-handed."

The police said that several college students were found staying at Saikia's residence on rent.

"Several objectionable items and Rs 70,000 in cash have been recovered from Saikia's residence. Other people staying on rent will also be questioned in connection with the case," the police said.

On Sunday night, the police busted a sex racket in a house of one Atabur Rahman in the Siyalmari area.

The police also caught two youths red-handed and three girls on the spot along with two bikes and other objectionable items.

Nagaon superintendent of police Anand Mishra said that police have stepped up their drive against illegal activities in the district.
