Tempur-Cloud vs Tempur-Adapt: Which is the best Tempur-Pedic mattress for you?

The Tempur-Pedic Tempur Cloud mattress on. blue fabric frame in a blue bedroom.

In this Tempur-Pedic mattress comparison, we're looking specifically at the Tempur-Cloud vs the Tempur-Adapt. These are two of the brand's most popular beds among sleepers with joint pain, yet they have different feels and levels of pressure relief. So how do you pick between them? We'll help you with this in-depth comparison that looks at each mattress across key areas including support, comfort and price.

Tempur-Pedic has been around for over 30 years and focuses mainly on mattresses designed to relieve pressure points during sleep and to help you sleep cooler. The medium-firm Tempur-Adapt is one of 2024's best mattresses for a range of sleepers thanks to astounding pressure relieve and deep full-body comfort. The Tempur-Cloud mattress is a little softer and slightly more affordable, and a good choice for side sleepers with hip pain.

A queen Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud mattress costs $1,999 (MSRP) compared to $2,199 (MSRP) for a queen Tempur-Adapt and we're hoping to see discounts on both during the forthcoming Memorial Day mattress sales. Both are made using NASA-developed Tempur foam (originally designed to help cushion astronauts during take-off) and both have cooling covers designed to regulate heat. They each come on a 90-night sleep trial, with a 10 year warranty and free mattress installation and old bed removal. Let's take a closer look...

Tempur-Cloud vs Tempur-Adapt mattress: Specs

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Tempur-Adapt mattress: Price & trials

  • Sale offers vary month on month, but up to 30% off is not uncommon
  • Tempur-Pedic offers a 90-day sleep trial on both of these mattresses
  • You'll also get a 10-year warranty and free white glove delivery

We consider both the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud and Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt to be luxury mattresses, though the Tempur-Cloud is a few hundred dollars cheaper. You can expect to pay $1,999 for a queen size Tempur-Cloud mattress whilst the Tempur-Adapt is slightly more expensive coming in at $2,199 for a queen. That's still reasonable for one of the best memory foam mattresses money can buy.

It is worth noting that the Tempur-Adapt does have three models in its range including the Legendary Pressure Relief which is the base model, the Advanced Pressure Relief and the Ultimate Pressure Relief. The Advanced pressure relief starts at $2899 for a twin and the the Ultimate Pressure relief starts from $3799.

As with all Tempur-Pedic mattresses, there is a 90-night trial on both of these beds. If you do decide to return your mattress within the 90 day period then you will receive a full refund mins the return shipping fee which is $175. Your 90 day period also starts from the day you have the mattress delivered not from the date you order it.

Both Tempur-Pedic mattresses also come with free delivery. However, the Tempur-Adapt comes with free white glove delivery. This means you get in-home set-up as well as removal of your old mattress, so that is a perk for spending a little extra on the Tempur-Adapt.

Both mattresses come with a 10 year warranty, so if your mattress has a manufacturer defect within 10 years from delivery Tempur-Pedic will either repair or replace it. It is worth checking the full terms and conditions of the warranty before you purchase as there are some limitations including liquid damage and stains.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Tempur-Adapt mattress: Design

  • Both mattresses are made up of an all-foam construction
  • The Tempur-Adapt is slightly deeper at 11" vs Tempur-Cloud 10"
  • Both mattresses come boxed

The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud and the Tempur-Adapt mattress both have similar design setups, with a couple of differences that justify why the Tempur-Adapt is the more expensive of the two.

The Tempur-Cloud mattress has four layers, the first being a 360-degree stretch cover. Whilst Tempur says this is breathable and supposed to encourage extra airflow, our tester found it slept warm during our review period.

There is then a soft, comfort layer which is a new take on the classic Tempur memory foam, followed a comfort layer and a firmer support layer that helps offer the pressure-relieving qualities we expect from a Tempur-Pedic. You can also buy the Tempur-Cloud in a hybrid version – see our best hybrid mattresses guide for our top recommendations.

The Tempur-Adapt is an inch higher than the Tempur-Cloud at 11” and also has four layers but it’s better news for hot sleepers as the first layer is a cool-to-touch cover that has a cooling yarn woven in to the fabric.

There is then a layer of soft Tempur-ES material which has an open-cell construction meaning that it will wick away any moisture during and keep your temperature stable so you stay cool and get a good night’s sleep. This is then followed by a dense layer of Original Tempur material and a base layer of Polyfoam for extra stability and motion absorption.

THe Tempur-Cloud doesn't have a removable cover and it's spot-only cleaning so keeping in mind what we mentioned about the warranty conditions, you may want to invest in one of the best mattress protectors if purchasing this model of mattresses so you protect the surface and your investment.

We'd recommend using a mattress protector on the Tempur-Adapt also, but this does have a removable and washable cover so you'll be able to keep it clean and hygenic with ease.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Tempur-Adapt mattress: Support & Comfort

  • The Tempur-Cloud mattress comes in an all-foam or hybrid design
  • The Tempur-Cloud has a medium feel, the Tempur-Adapt medium-firm
  • The Tempur-Adapt offers superior pressure relief

When it comes to judging both firmness and comfort of a mattress the matter is often subjective. But the Tempur-Cloud and Tempur-Adapt both have a medium-firm rating so around 7.5 out of 10. This makes both mattresses a great choice for back sleepers as there’s plenty of pressure relief with the support needed to keep the spine in perfect alignment.

During our Tempur-Adapt mattress review our testers found this wasn’t the best choice for side sleepers as it didn’t quite give enough support in the knee and hip area. The Tempur-Cloud offers similar support but if you’re a combination sleeper you may not enjoy how much the top softer foam layer pulls the body in a little too deep making it difficult to move around on.

Both the Tempur-Cloud and the Tempur-Adapt offer excellent motion isolation, this is great news for couples or anyone sharing their bed with pets and means no more disturbed nights.

All foam beds are not known for the their good edge support but the Tempur-Adapt offers significantly better edge support than the Tempur-Cloud. So if you like to sleep on the edge of the bed or enjoy sitting and relaxing on your bed you may want to go for the Tempur-Adapt over the Tempur-Cloud.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Tempur-Adapt mattress: Temperature control

  • Both all foam beds which are known for getting hot
  • The Tempur-Adapt offers a cooler sleep than the Tempur-Cloud
  • The Tempur-Adapt also has an open-cell construction for extra cooling

When it comes to all foam beds you have to accept that they are going to sleep hot. Neither of these mattresses have any cooling gel-foam layers but the Tempur-Adapt does sleep cooler than the Tempur-Cloud.

When we tested the Tempur-Cloud our testers tried it out in a cooler part of their home and noted that while they didn't feel hot when they first got in to bed, they did wake up feeling hot and bothered.

Testers trying out the Tempur-Adapt didn't quite have the same experience. The Tempur-Adapt has a cool to touch cover and the Tempur material used within the layers has an open-cell structure which not only helps to dissipate excess heat but also promotes extra air flow.

Whilst this does a good job of keeping things a little cooler, if you’re a very hot sleeper you may not find this a good fit and instead would benefit from a specific cooling mattress such as the Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress
