Temporary rule change brought in due to Covid could be scrapped by EFL for next season

The rule allowing teams to use as many as five substitutions is likely to be scrapped in the EFL next season.

That is despite The International Football Association Board (IFAB) taking the decision to extend the rule until the end of the 2021-22 campaign. The decision has been taken due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. The five subs rule was originally brought into force upon football's restart in June 2020.

It was thought that it was beneficial due to the sheer number of games being condensed into a short period, therefore allowing more wiggle room.

It allowed managers to make as many as five changes in three intervals during the match, although it has to be said that it was a rarity that all five alterations were used within a game.

It was dropped by the Premier League for the 2020-21 season whilst the EFL went back to three at the start of the campaign only to re-introduce five subs in November.

That followed consultation with the 72 teams.

However, with a much longer rest period between two seasons this summer and games expected to be spread out more, it is widely expected that the EFL will revert back to the traditional rule of a maximum of three substitutes per side per game.

The EFL stages its AGM on Thursday when the matter will be one of a number of issues debated.

The issue is one that divides many within football. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp criticised the Premier League for not reintroducing the rule at the start of the last season, despite almost all other major leagues doing so.

He said: "All the teams have to understand why it's so helpful. It's not an advantage, it's a necessity. 100 per cent.

"In all other countries it happens and here we make a bit more fun of the competition by having only three subs. That is really incredible."
