Temporary mobile coronavirus testing centre set up in Sunderland

A mobile coronavirus testing unit has been set up in Sunderland today after a "sharp rise" in cases.

The unit was set up at Brinkburn Crescent Car Park, Sunderland, on Wednesday (September 9), for anyone requiring a test.

It will available on Thursday from 11am until 3pm.

It comes after the number of cases rose by 364% to 36.1 cases per 100,000 in the past week.

While the rise is partially linked to a 300-person a charity football event on August 30 at Burnside working men’s club, which lies on the border of Sunderland and Durham there has also been a rise across the city.

The outbreak caused several businesses and schools to close their doors in a bid to reduce the chance of transmission.

The council previously said they are working to get testing centres as "close to people as possible" to make it easier to identify those infected.

Durham's Director of Public Health Amanda Healy, said: "What we hope is that we have testing as close to people as possible, so we've still got the testing centre at Stanley and several other across County Durham and colleagues in Sunderland are looking at mobile testing units and having access to testing as close as possible for people who might have been at the event."

Anyone driving to the test site is reminded to keep their car windows closed until the staff ask you to open them to reduce the risk of spreading the virus during the testing process itself.

You can get a test for yourself if you have coronavirus symptoms or for someone you live with if they have symptoms.

You can also get a test if you live in England and have been told to have a test before you go into hospital, your local council asks you to get a test or you’re taking part in a government pilot project

Coronavirus symptoms include a high temperature, continuous cough and a loss of or change to your sense of smell or taste.

You can book your test by visiting the NHS website here.
