Temporary 20mph zones to be introduced in 41 towns and villages across Perth and Kinross

Temporary 20mph speed limits will be introduced in 41 towns and villages across Perth and Kinross.

The new limits are part of the £1.1 million Spaces for People project supporting active travel during lockdown.

Work will start “in the coming weeks” to create the limits, according to Perth and Kinross Council.

It is hoped the measures will improve road safety, enable safe physical distancing and encourage people to get out and about while coronavirus restrictions remain in place.

Twelve towns have been selected to have 20mph zones in areas where there is a high density of pedestrian and vehicle movements.

These are Auchterarder, Alyth, Blairgowrie, Bridge of Earn, Comrie, Coupar Angus, Crieff, Glenfarg, Kinross, Milnathort, Pitlochry, Scone.

In some cases, these are extensions to zones that are already in place.

A further 29 villages have been chosen because they have limited or no footways resulting in pedestrians and vehicles sharing road space.

These are Abernyte, Airntully , Ardler, Ballintuim, Bridge of Cally, Butterstone, Campmuir, Cleish, Collace, Dunning, Errol Station, Forneth, Forteviot, Grandtully, Grange, Kettins, Kinnaird, Kinloch, Kinrossie, Kirkmichael, Maryburgh and Keltybridge, Meikleour, Pitcairngreen, Rait, Scotlandwell, Spittalfield, Strathtay, Tummel Bridge, Wolfhill.

Funded by the Scottish Government and managed by Sustrans Scotland, Spaces for People is a temporary infrastructure programme offering funding and support to make it safer for people who choose to walk, cycle or wheel for permitted journeys and exercise while physical distancing in place during COVID-19 as we transition out of lockdown.
