Met Office issues yellow weather warning for Wales as below-zero temperatures bring risk of ice and snow

Some of the coldest air of the year so far is forecast to sweep Wales this week, leaving temperatures feeling as low as -7C at times.

The frigid air may also be accompanied by ice, snow and sleet in some locations, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning for the whole of the country.

As cloud clears across Wales throughout the night on Wednesday, very low cold air will move in with temperatures widely below freezing for Thursday morning.

The south west coast of Wales will bear the brunt of the frigid air, with feels-like temperatures ranging from 0 to -7C. Meanwhile, the northern parts of Wales and the south west will be more seasonable at around 0 to -1C.

Anyone heading outdoors should prepare for widespread frost and icy spots on roads.

A yellow weather warning for ice, which covers every local authority in Wales, will come into effect at 5pm, as a mixture of rain sleet and snow, are expected to fall across the country.

According to the warning, "a more persistent spell of rain and hill snow is likely to spread south across northern England and north Wales during Thursday evening and night. Whilst ice is expected to be the main hazard, snow is likely in places too."

Snow is most likely across the high ground of Wales, with 1-3cm possible.

It could fall in other locations, according to the forecast, but accumulations are likely to be "slight and temporary".

A swathe of the country stretching from Llangolman and Brecon northward to Builth Wells, Llanwddyn, Welshpool and Blaenau Ffestiniog could all see flakes fly during the cold spell.

While only essential travel is currently permitted in Wales, those who must venture out should prepare for delays and slippery spots on roads, particularly on untreated roads.
