Temperatures set to plunge as freezing weather and wintry showers forecast

Temperatures are set to plunge again over the next few days in the UK, with -11C winds and up to five inches of snow.

A cold blast is set to bring snow first for Scotland today and then northern England, just days after Storm Arwen battered the UK.

The Met Office has issued three yellow warnings for ice across the UK - and a weather alert states that there is an 80 percent chance of severe cold and heavy snow between now and Saturday (December 4).

It states to expect: "Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surface.

"Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle path. Some roads and railways likely to be affected by ice and perhaps snow, resulting in longer journey times."

Snow from Scotland is expected to spread across northern England today, remaining over the coming days and the weekend despite some slightly milder temperatures.

Netweather charts for Thursday show that the temperature could hit lows of -8C in Scotland and -2C across northern England, the South East and Wales, reports the Mirror.

But the wind chill factor means that these temperatures of -2C will feel more like -11C.

Manchester can expect some wintry showers and snow this weekend, which could last into Monday.

The Met Office's forecast says that on Thursday night, Manchester will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain.

It continues: "These outbreaks of rain falling as sleet and snow at first over high ground, bringing a risk of ice early on in the night. Milder by the morning. Minimum temperature -1 C."

For Friday, it says: "A damp and cloudy but mild start. Perhaps turning brighter and colder by the afternoon. Chilly in the evening. Maximum temperature 8 °C."

Meanwhile, the outlook for Saturday to Monday in Manchester is rather unsettled.

The forecast predicts: "Blustery showers, wintry over high ground. Drier and calmer on Sunday. Further rain and possibly snow on Monday."
