Temperatures set to plummet overnight across North East, warns Met Office

The North East is in for another chilly night with a drop in temperatures.

The Met Office says people across the region should prepare for rain and more cold weather this weekend.

On Friday, snow arrived in Northumberland, turning remote hills white and snowy scenes were also visible in the hills around Weardale.

Now forecasters say temperatures will remain low across the North East on Saturday night and there will also be rain.

The minimum temperature will be 1C but it could feel colder than that.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "On Saturday night, it will be generally cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain, which will be sometimes heavy.

"Any cloud breaks will lead to temperatures quickly falling and patchy fog forming. The minimum temperature is 1C.

"On Sunday, it will be predominantly cloudy with scattered showers, some heavy. Later the showers will largely die away, with most places becoming dry.

"The highest temperatures will be along the coast, generally feeling cold. The maximum temperature is 8C."

The forecast for Monday to Wednesday is also for cold weather, with the mercury rising no more than 7C or 8C.

The spokesperson added: "Monday will be generally rather cloudy and dry, but with a chance of a few showers.

"Tuesday becoming breezy, with rain probably arriving later, then clearing through Wednesday."
