Temperatures set to drop by the weekend as chilly start to April expected

A colder snap is expected to chill parts of the country with temperatures falling back into single figures as a bitter northerly flow brings a reminder of winter.

The cold front will plunge down the UK dragging cooler, more unsettled conditions from the north Atlantic by the weekend with a chance of wintry showers over higher ground in Scotland.

Light rain in the north will bring a gloomy outlook to start Saturday with cloud spreading southeastwards as the day progresses.

It will feel much chillier than of late in the cool north-northwesterly breeze.

Much of the rain will ease on Sunday but it should stay cool and cloudy in the north, while southern regions remain brighter.

It will be more changeable during the early part of April with outbreaks of rain or showers and more blustery conditions, especially in the north.

A spokesperson for The Weather Channel said: “Temperatures should stay above normal this week lifting into the mid-high teens but we are expecting a dip around Sunday in a northerly flow.

“We are currently expecting temperatures slightly below normal in a northwesterly through the first week of April but confidence drops after that.”

Forecasters are predicting that high pressure will dominate for much of the new month.

This should lead to generally dry conditions in many parts but a risk of rain or showers in the north.

It should start to become more settled and milder by the middle of the month.
