Temperatures plummet into minus figures tonight as the Met Office predicts snow and ice

Temperatures across the North East are set to plummet into minutes figures tonight as the Met Office predict snow and ice on Monday.

The Met Office's forecast for tonight said the minimum temperature would be-2 and that the region could expect "fairly widespread frost".

It reads: "Any coastal wintry showers will soon fade to leave a largely dry night, with clear skies for most. It will be another cold night, with a fairly widespread frost. Minimum temperature -2 °C."

It comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice between 10pm on Monday and 11.59pm on Tuesday.

The warning predicted parts of the region including Tyneside, County Durham and parts of Northumberland would see snow, with a risk of "widespread ice".

It states: "Snow, with a risk of widespread ice, is likely to push slowly northeast during Tuesday, bringing difficult travel conditions."

It also warned of possible travel delays on roads with some vehicles becoming stranded with bus and train services potentially delayed or cancelled.

The warning also said some rural communities could become cut off and power cuts may occur.

It comes a week after Storm Christoph left behind a wake of destruction with thousands forced to flee their homes and flood warnings issued up and down the country.
