Temperatures in Scotland to soar by 2050 as climate change experts warn of 'new hazards'

Climate change experts are warning of "new hazards" with temperatures in Scotland to soar in the next 30 years.

A report released last week by Climate Ready Clyde, prepared by academics at the University of Edinburgh, looked at how weather is likely to change throughout the 21st century.

And it claimed that there will be increases in the number of "heatwave days" with summer average temperatures rising to 32C by 2050 – and then 34C by the 2070s.

The report, entitled Mapping Future Heatwave Extremes, is informed by the Met Office's official UK climate projections.

James Curran, chair of Climate Ready Clyde, said: "Heatwaves can, for example, result in premature death and illnesses, particularly affecting older and younger people, and exacerbate existing illnesses such as cardio-vascular and respiratory diseases.

"It also shows that as well as compounding existing challenges such as flooding, climate change will bring us new hazards which we will need to address."

Kit England, programme manager for Climate Ready Clyde, added that the "findings suggest the need for more detailed evidence and assessment of possible adaptation options to cope with these future challenges".

A number of marches and events have taken place in Edinburgh in recent months as people aim to raise awareness of and demand action on climate change and global warming issues.

And Edinburgh Live reported last month that a map showed the parts of the city which could vanish if global temperatures rise by 2C.

An independent research group called Climate Central claimed that the dock area of Leith would be hit hard by rising sea levels. .
