Temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing across much of the UK on Monday night, with the Met Office issuing a yellow ice warning for many areas.

The warning is in effect for Scotland, Wales, north-west and north-east England, the West Midlands and south-west England, as well as London and the south-east.

Freezing icy stretches are expected to form as ground temperatures sink below zero. Drivers are warned that the conditions could make road surfaces hazardous.

A widespread frost is expected over the northern half of Scotland, while there will be outbreaks of sleet and snow on higher ground further south, and over the far north of northern England, although Benson is Oxfordshire is expected to be the coldest spot in the UK overnight, with a minimum of -6C (21.2F), while Croydon in south London will be a chilly -3C.

After a frosty start on Tuesday, the best of the sunshine will be across the south, while it will be cloudy and mostly dry elsewhere, with some scattered wintry showers in the north.

However, the Isles of Scilly will reach 10C on Tuesday, according to the Met Office.

After the wintry burst early in the week, temperatures are set to return to double digits in some parts by the weekend. The maximum in London is forecast to be 10C on both Saturday and Sunday.

A 100-mile wide corridor of snow stretched from north-west Scotland to south-east England from Saturday night into Sunday morning, with London seeing snow for the first time this winter.
