Tempe train fire: "Catastrophe" as bridge collapses and carriages engulfed in flames

Huge flames and thick clouds of smoke are pouring out of a train after a bridge collapsed in Arizona.

Dramatic photographs and video show fire blazing after the train derailed over the Tempe Town Lake early on Wednesday.

Part of the bridge has fallen and fire is spreading across almost the entire bridge which is continuing to burn in what has been described as a "catastrophe".

Bright orange flames are rising and dense, dark grey plumes of smoke are filling the air, as seen in shocking footage of the incident.

The smoke has been described in local reports as "thick," "black" and "intense" with reports saying it can be seen "for miles".

It appears the train has collapsed onto the Rio Salado Parkway.

Emergency services and fire crews are at the scene tackling the blaze, where shocked witnesses are standing staring from afar at the disaster.

About 90 firefighters from multiple departments are at the scene.

"My daughter heard the noise, awoke and saw part of the train fall into the lake," one said.

Others in the area said they were woken up by sirens.

A woman living nearby tweeted: "Suppose I’m glad I overslept cuz I was gonna head to the lake for a quick standup paddle board paddle around the lake this morning.

"Hope everyone in the water cleared out and got out of harm’s way.(sic)"

Another said: "How scary I hope no one was hurt."

One of the tankers was carrying highly flammable oil used in the production of Nylon.

The incident happened on the south side of the lake.

Traffic in the area is being restricted.

Tempe Police have tweeted: "Tempe Police and Tempe Fire are on scene of a train derailment and large fire over Tempe Town Lake.

"Several roads are restricted near Tempe Town Lake and west of downtown Tempe.

"Please avoid the area."

There are currently no reports of serious injuries - though one person has been treated for smoke inhalation.

The train crew are understood to be unhurt.

It is not known what caused the derailment, which took place over the 2.4mile long man-made lake.

A spokesperson for the son for Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport claims the incident has not impacted airport operations, with no cancelations or delays.

There are fears the fire could spread to nearby oil tankers and that, if the bridge collapses, the environmental impact could be huge.
