Telstra Tower closed amid reports of disrepair

Telstra Tower has been closed off to visits from the public this week, amid reports the Canberra landmark has been left to deteriorate.

The iconic building has been shut since Saturday to allow for safety systems to be investigated and works to be undertaken, a spokesperson has advised.

Telstra did not advise when it might reopen.

The revolving restaurant inside the tower has been closed since 2013 and the gift shop attached is also closed.

Telstra has advised there are no immediate plans to rejuvenate the facility, despite Chief Minister Andrew Barr stating he would speak to executives in coming months about its development.

In 2019, Canberra residents were called upon to reimagine the future of the landmark, with a cable car and giant water slide both put forward.

In response to recent calls for a spruce up, the communications provider said it regularly reviews the purpose and function of its assets.

"We will continue to engage openly with the community and government where appropriate to assess any future proposals and work," the spokesman said.

He said Telstra would ensure any works required were completed as soon as possible.

"We know this will be disappointing for many as it is a tourist attraction and an iconic building, but the safety of visitors to the Tower is our main priority," the spokesman said.

"The Telstra Tower is an iconic building which is close to the hearts of many Canberrans and indeed Telstra."
