Telly probe puts focus on death of Dumfries woman Jean Hanlon

A documentary on a Dumfries woman’s death has helped raise awareness of her case.

Jean Hanlon’s death in 2009 was the subject of Channel 5 show, Murder in Paradise, which first aired recently.

More than 500,000 people have watched the programme which details the case as well as setbacks and failings in the investigation.

Jean’s body was pulled from the sea near Heraklion after she had been missing for four days.

Her death was initially ruled as accidental drowning but a post mortem found signs of a struggle and injuries which were sustained before her death.

Jean’s son, Michael Porter, said: “Since the show aired it has been overwhelming.

“The number of people who have gotten in touch has been really incredible.

“The messages of support have been phenomenal.

“We’ve also received some information which we hope might help us with the case.

“Whether it takes us anywhere, we need to wait and see.

“But overall, I think this show has been a success for our case.”

In addition to people still downloading and watching the show on Channel Five’s online catch-up service, Michael’s petition to get the case fully reinvestigated in the UK and Greece is gathering pace.

He added: “We’re just so grateful that my mum has gotten the response that she deserves.

“I’ve had another 1,800 signatures added to the petition which is now taking us to more than 4,500.

“We just want to thank everyone for their continued support. People in Dumfries stick together and the support we’ve had locally, as well as from further afield, has been overwhelming.”
