It’s been 40 years since the 1981 riots, which began in Brixton in London and spread across major cities in England, including Toxteth in Liverpool, Handsworth in Birmingham, Chapeltown in Leeds, and Moss Sidein Manchester.

On this important anniversary, the Guardian is keen to explore underlying social causes that led to the biggest unrest in post-war Britain and the remedies that were implemented.

Please get in touch if you were affected by the riots — whether you witnessed it, took part, or were involved the policing operation, or government response to the unrest.
