Televised SNP leadership debates set to go ahead as broadcasters make plans

TELEVISED debates between the candidates for SNP leader look set to happen after all three expressed an interest in taking part.

The National understands that both STV and the BBC have been in touch with the party looking to organise televised debates, although planning is in the early stages.

SNP officials say they are not opposed to televised hustings, and that broadcasters have been told of the party position.

As it stands there are three people in the running to take over from Nicola Sturgeon as SNP leader: Kate Forbes, Humza Yousaf, and Ash Regan.

All three have said they would be willing to take part in a televised debate, which STV have confirmed they are trying to organise.

An STV spokesperson said: “STV has a track record in carrying such debates across Scottish and UK parties and, whilst we can’t confirm details right now, we are looking into airing an SNP leadership debate.”

The BBC has been more tight-lipped, but the broadcaster did carry leadership debates for both Labour and the Conservatives in recent years.

A BBC spokesperson said: “We are continuing to provide in-depth coverage of the leadership campaigns and details of any relevant programming would be released through the usual channels.”

SNP members will be able to vote on their preferred candidate for leader from March 13 to midday on March 27, with the winner announced that same day.
